Announcements

  • Mononucleosis and Athletes

Unfortunately a 2nd CUSD high school athlete has been diagnosed with Mono.   CUSD believes it is necessary to reach out to each of you so we can hopefully stop any spread of this virus to other athletes/schools.

Mono is a highly contagious virus that causes sore throat, swollen glands (typically posterior cervical lymph nodes), fatigue, +/- fever.  Mono is spread through saliva and oral secretions such as sneezing/coughing.   Mono will affect 50-70% of high school students by the time they reach college.  This is a major reason you do not typically hear of collegiate or professional athletes sitting out due to Mono.  This is a major issue with high school athletes.  Please make sure your athletes are not putting their mouth on the water bottles or fountains.  Please ensure all water bottles, treatment table surfaces are cleaned and wiped down daily.  The incubation period for Mono is 30-50 days.  There is a "mono spot" test in the office that can be performed.  It MAY detect Mono if the "viral load" is high enough in the blood to detect.  If the athlete tests negative with the "Mono Spot" in office, but symptoms have only been for a couple days, the "viral load" in the blood may not be high enough to detect the virus.  Therefore, a blood draw, sent to the lab for a "Viral Capsid Antigen" IgG & IgM test should be performed to ensure there is no Mono.   The major concern for Mono is the potential devastating injury to the spleen.   The Mono virus causes the spleen to be enlarged and has the greatest risk for injury during the first 3 weeks of the infection.  Athletes should be removed from lifting weights, exertion, and obvious contact sports during this time.  Patient should be re-evaluated to ensure their are symptom free with no enlarged spleen prior to return to play.

Please read this consensus statement from the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine in reference to Mono.

Last week as  Newsweek released their annual list of the top 500 high schools in the nation. ACP-Erie was listed as one of their top schools, earning the 149th position (up from 166 in 2015). ACP-Erie is the only Chandler high school to earn a spot on both Newsweek's  Top High Schools & Beating the Odds list. Congratulations to our students and staff on this achievement - their hard work and dedication continues to pay off and they should be very proud! It is great to be a Knight. Please click here to review Newsweek's list and read more about the criteria used to place schools on the list.
