Chandler English Language Arts Overview
Chandler Unified School District recognizes English Language Arts (ELA) is at the core of a student’s education.  Academic achievement is a high priority.  Teachers provide rich and authentic learning experiences after combining two or more of the reading, writing, speaking and listening ELA standards.
Students in the Chandler Unified School District are immersed in learning environments that include evidence-based core programs with expert teachers who are responsive to student needs. Teachers closely monitor student learning and performance to ensure academic excellence.
Through rigorous and interesting textual analysis of literature, drama, speeches, informational text, poetry and other text, students develop an understanding of other perspectives and cultures.  Twenty-first century skills are embedded in ELA instruction, preparing students to be ready to compete successfully in the global economy.
As students master the standards in ELA, they are able to exhibit with increasing fullness and regularity these capacities of the literate individual.

   • They demonstrate independence.
   • They build strong content knowledge.
   • They respond to the varying demands of audience,
purpose, and discipline.
   • They comprehend as well as critique.
   • They value evidence.
   • They use technology and digital media strategically and
   • They develop an understanding of other perspectives
      and cultures.

“Literacy arouses hopes, not only in society as a whole but also in the individual who is striving for fulfillment, happiness and personal benefit by learning how to read and write. Literacy... means far more than learning how to read and write... The aim is to transmit... knowledge and promote social participation.”
