The City of Chandler Family Bike Ride will be on Saturday, April 1. It is a 7.8-mile ride along the Paseo Canal. This is a free event. Registration: 7-8 a.m.; Ride begins at 8 a.m.

The Arizona Auditor General on Wednesday released the results of its Arizona School District Spending report for fiscal year 2016. Chandler Unified ranks No. 1 in the state in the percentage of funds spent in the classroom. This has been a priority of the district, starting with our citizens budget committee through the actions of our Governing Board. To attract and retain quality individuals we ensure that our teacher salaries and benefits are among the highest in the state. This reflected in the state’s classroom expenditure report. Other factors that help Chandler Unified is our continuous enrollment growth and the community’s support of a 15 percent budget override.
Santan Junior High competed against nine cheer teams from across the State to win the junior high cheer championship.
Perry High DECA students won three state chapter awards and two national awards in the State DECA competition in Tucson. They had 11 event finalists with five students qualifying for the international competition. Additionally, the Perry chapter earned 12 leadership spots for the Internationals in California. Finally, Amezliz Price-Dominguez is the first-ever Perry student to be elected as an Arizona DECA State Officer.
Conley Elementary recently celebrated its 20th year anniversary. As part of the festivities, Principal Joe Walters honored the school’s previous principals, Frank Narducci, Susie Pecoraro and Erica Alexander. The school’s namesake Howard Conley joined in the fun. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce’s Ostrich Festival will be held March 10-12 at Tumbleweed Park. Attractions: Ostrich Races, Petting Zoo, High Dive Show, Pig Races, Camel & Pony Rides, Wild Science STEM Exhibit, I-Flip, Drone Zone, and other entertainment. Hear the Spin Doctors and The Gin Blossoms play live on Friday. Starship, featuring Mickey Thomas and Eddie Money, will perform on Saturday. Sunday will feature Forever in Your Mind and Los Lobos. The Basha Bears captured their first-ever state boys basketball championship Tuesday night, defeating Corona del Sol, 75-65, at Grand Canyon University.

Perry High recently was recognized as the five-time reigning state theatre champions.
Amy Drake, social studies teacher at Santan Junior High, won the Shofar Zachor Award, which signifies the calling out to recognize efforts to remember the Holocaust and to help guarantee it will never happen again. The Shofar is the horn of remembrance and a call to service. Zachor is the ethical duty to remember. Amy Drake has exemplified this in her years of sharing and teaching the Holocaust. She will be honored at a commemoration ceremony on April 23 at Temple Chai in Phoenix.
